Staying active in college isn’t always easy, but at Indiana University, it’s surprisingly doable. Between IU’s on-campus gyms and Bloomington’s off-campus fitness studios and gyms, there’s no shortage of ways to move and recharge. Whether you’re lifting, taking a yoga class, or trying something new, Bloomington gives you plenty of ways to stay active and actually enjoy it.

On-Campus Fitness 

IU makes it easy for students to stay active without ever leaving campus. From state-of-the-art gyms to scenic outdoor spaces, the university’s facilities are designed to fit every workout style.

  1. Student Recreational Sports Center (SRSC)

Located on Law Lane, the SRSC is the main fitness hub for IU students. Access is free with your CrimsonCard, and the facility has everything you could need for a great workout. It includes multiple strength and cardio areas, group exercise studios, five basketball and volleyball courts, racquetball and squash courts, and an Olympic-sized pool with diving wells. You can also use the indoor track, futsal court, and areas for table tennis or badminton. Students can check out free equipment, use locker rooms with private changing stalls, and relax in the Wellness Studio, which offers HydroMassage, CryoLounge, and RelaxSpace at no cost.

  1. Bill Garrett Fieldhouse

Although it's currently closed due to renovations, the Bill Garrett Fieldhouse is a student favorite. Located in the center of campus, the fieldhouse has a more relaxed vibe than the SRSC, while still providing plenty of ways to stay active. It houses strength and cardio areas, a group exercise studio, basketball/volleyball courts, a track, open-use dance studios, and more! The facility is expected to reopen by the summer of 2026.

  1. Intramural Sports and Clubs

If you like competition, IU Rec Sports has plenty of intramural options such as basketball, soccer, and flag football. Club teams travel to compete with other universities and are a fun way to meet people while staying active.

  1. Walking Around Campus

Sometimes the best workout is simply getting outside. With IU’s beautiful limestone buildings, tree-lined paths, and rolling hills, walking around campus is a great way to stay active and clear your mind between classes.
